Troops seize firearms, other war materials after clash with NPA terrorists in Sarangani Province

Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City – March 19, 2023

Operating troops from the 38th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army recovered firearms and other war materials after an armed confrontation with 20 members of the communist terrorist group at Sitio Kapanal, Gasi, KIamba, Sarangani Province on March 17, 2023.

According to Maj. Gen. Alex Rillera, Joint Task Force Central Commander, troops were conducting a focused military operation when they encountered the CTG members believed to be under a.k.a. Rafa/Ruby of the Regional Headquarters (RHQ) of the Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR). Firefight lasted for about 20 minutes, after which the enemies withdrew, bringing their casualties with them. The exchange of fires resulted in the wounding of one army officer, while the fatalities on the enemy side are yet to be determined.

While scouring the encounter site, operating troops recovered three high-powered firearms, including two M16A1 rifles and one M14 rifle. Also recovered were four bandoliers, one medical kit, five jungle packs, two cellular phones, propaganda materials, and enemy personal belongings.

Soldiers under the 1st Mechanized Brigade continue to conduct pursuit operations in the area.

Western Mindanao Command Chief, Lt. Gen. Roy Galido, said that despite the constant call for peaceful resolutions of conflicts, some of the CTG remnants remain indoctrinated with false ideologies. “Rest assured that we will not stop going after these remnants that endeavor to execute their terror plots in our area of operation.”
