CAMP MELCHOR F DELA CRUZ, Gamu, Isabela – Startroopers relentlessly conduct relief and rescue operations to municipalities and barangays that were flooded due to heavy rains brought by the northeast monsoon and the tail end of a cold front that greatly affected Cagayan Valley Region.

Rescue operations started yesterday (Dec 05, 2019) as floodwaters continue to rise in the areas near the Cagayan River. The different units of 5th Infantry (Star) Division together with its OPCON units were deployed to rescue and assist the residents stranded in the flood.

The 17th Infantry Battalion conducted relief and rescue operations in Tuguegaro City, Alcala, Amulung, Lasam and Pamplona while Marine Battalion Landing Team-10 extended their assistance to the residents of Baggao and Gattaran. Additionally, the 95th Infantry Battalion together with the Division Disaster Rescue Operation Team assisted the residents of Ilagan City, Tumauini and San Mariano while the 86th Infantry Battalion aided the residents of Quirino.

Brigadier General Lawrence E Mina, Brigade Commander, 502nd Infantry Brigade said that amidst strong water current and rainstorm, the Startroopers with the help of TOG-2, Philippine Air Force continue to rescue the residents stranded in their flooded homes and move them in the evacuation area with the use of the rubber boats and other equipment. The troops also distributed relief goods to the residents who refused to leave their houses.

Major General Pablo M Lorenzo AFP, Commander, 5th Infantry (Star) Division, commended the troops for their dedicated service by saying “I am pleased to commend you for the continues conduct of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations. Your prompt response and timely deployment saved lives and properties, and also demonstrates the professionalism and dedication of every Startrooper in the performance of the Unit’s mission.

He also assured the populace that the Strartroopers are very much willing to extend a helping hand to ensure that all are safe. “It is our mandated task to serve and protect the Filipino people and the sovereignty as well. Rest assured, your Startroopers are very much willing to continue the support and assistance for the residents affected by these calamities to ensure that no one is left behind” concluded MGen Lorenzo.
