MAGPET, Cotabato – The New People’s Army (NPA) terrorists burned a day care center in Magpet, Cotabato on Thursday, November 15, 2018.
Lt. Col. Ehrlich Noel Paraso, Commanding Officer of 19 th Infantry Battalion said the incident happened at Purok 6, Barangay Mahongcog at around 8:00 o’clock in the morning, when a group of about 25 armed men clad in military uniform entered the area and introduced themselves as members of 39 th Infantry Battalion.
An eye witness said he found out that the armed men were not really government troops when they started asking for money from the residents. “One of the NPA’s tied the hands of Emelita Nebris, a day care worker. The NPA’s also took and burned Nebris’ ID card before finally setting fire the day care center”, the eye witness said.
An official from Barangay Mahongcog, Magpet has confirmed that the NPA failed to extort the amount of Php 50,000.00 from the barangay; thus, the NPA in return burned their day care center. Paraso said that the incident was a clear and blatant violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Law (CARHRIHL).
“It is very unfortunate that despite being a signatory to the CARHRIHL, the NPA, with the guidance of their leaders, still continue with their old ways of threatening the innocent civilians,” said Paraso.
The government is constructing structures such as day care centers that nurture young children. But the NPA desperately destroy them to compel the civilians to give in to their (NPA) demands. “This is how treacherous these NPA bandits are. They are worse than criminals, they are arsonist, extortionists and terrorists”, Paraso stressed.#
