NSFA, Panacan, Davao City – On July 18, 2021, LCDR Serapio L Bedico PN (Res) and other marine reservists rescued a 9-year-old child who drowned at a beach in Purok Baybay, Brgy Pangubatan, Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte.
During the interview with COL Filomeno P Carreon PN (M) (GSC), Commander, Naval Reserve Center Eastern Mindanao (NRC-EM), he claimed that NRC-EM conducted a Disaster Emergency Response Training for members of the 7121st Naval Company Reserve at Magamomo Elementary School, IGACOS, Davao del Norte. On their way back to Davao City, they heard cries for help at a distance. As they sensed the seriousness of the situation, they instinctively dismounted their motorbikes and hurried towards the scene. When they arrived on the scene, they found an unconscious boy being attended to by his grandmother. Upon initial assessment, LCDR Bedico, Officer-in-Command, 91st Marine Battalion Reserve (91st MBnR) and the Chief of Staff of Naval Forces Reserve Eastern Mindanao (NFREM) revealed that the child had no pulse, was not breathing and his lips have turned bluish. He immediately performed first-aid by doing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in the hopes that the child could still be saved. After a few minutes, the youngster expelled a bubble-like liquid and regained consciousness. The boy was subsequently handed over to his relatives and taken to the nearest hospital for additional medical evaluation. The child’s parents and relatives were extremely grateful to the marine reservists who responded to their distress call. The rescued 9-year old victim was later identified as Jade Macalam and a resident of Brgy Anonang, IGACOS, Davao del Norte.
The rescuers were members of the 91st MBnR of the NRC-EM of the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao. They are the embodiment of a selfless soldier, fulfilling their sworn duty to the people and their country. Despite the pandemic, their consistent training paid off and resulted in the saving of a precious young life.
