Army joins 121st Independence Day celebration in CDO

CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City – Hundreds of Cagay-anons were entertained by the 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division troopers during the celebration of the 121st Philippine Independence Day in Cagayan de Oro City, June 12.

This year’s commemoration dubbed “Kalayaan 2019: Tapang ng Bayan, Malasakit sa Mamamayan” was held at the Events Center, Ayala Centrio Mall this city.

The static and kinetic displays of the Army’s 4th ID featured assorted capabilities including modern weaponry and equipment, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) capability. Soldiers from the Army’s elite units namely, the First Scout Ranger Regiment and Special Forces Regiment also showcased their warfighting skills and equipment.

One of the highlights of this year’s commemoration was the Peace Concert courtesy of the Diamond Troopers band who wowed the spectators with their musical rendition.

Amy Eublera, 25, of Brgy. Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City said: “Dako akong pasalamat sa mga Sundalo tungod sa ilang pag protekta ug pagpadayun sa pagbantay sa kalinaw ug kahapsay sa Pilipinas. Gina idolo gyud nako sila tungod andam silang mamatay aron mapabilin gawasnon kitang tanan.”(I thank our Philippine Army for always protecting us and preserving peace in the country. I idolize them because they are always ready to sacrifice in order to protect our freedom.)

Joel Besagas, 37, of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, saluted the soldiers for their service. “Hinaot nga ipadayon ang maayong nasugdan sa Army, sa pagtabang sa katawhan apektado sa kalamidad og pag protektar batok sa terrorista sama sa Marawi Seige, amping mo perminte og saludo ko sa inyo”, he said. (I hope that the Army will continue its good deeds in helping the people affected by calamities, and protecting us against terrorists. Take care always and my salute to you.)

Maj. Gen. Franco Nemesio Gacal, Commander 4ID, said: “We want to spend and share this memorable day with the community. This is one way of honoring the sacrifices of our forefathers who fought for our country’s freedom. This is a tribute to their heroism.”

Gacal also reminded everyone that protecting our freedom is a shared responsibility. “Let us all bring out the hero in each and every one of us as we converge and work together to build a society that is peaceful and progressive”, he added.

Aside from the displays, the Army also put up recruitment booths, rappelling station, audio-visual presentations and free BP check-up during the day-long activity.
