Bancasi, Butuan City – The 402nd Infantry (Stingers) Brigade joins the nation in celebrating the National Women’s Month with the theme “We Make Change Work for Women” through different activities in its area of responsibility covering the provinces of Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte and 1st District of Surigao del Sur.
The National Women’s Month Celebration every March is part of the worldwide observance of International Women’s Day (IWD). In the Philippines, it has been celebrated since 1988 under the Proclamation of Resolution Number 20 which designated the month of March as “Women’s Role in History Month.”
During the Flag Raising Ceremony this morning, March 9, 2020, held at the 402nd Brigade Headquarters, Brgy Bancasi, Butuan City, the 402nd Brigade gave emphasis to women empowerment in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Said activity was done simultaneously with all of the Battalions under its Operational Control.
The highlight during the flag-raising ceremony was the reading of the message of the Commanding General, Philippine Army by Brigadier General Maurito L Licudine, 402nd Infantry Brigade Commander where he stressed that the Army believes in the advocacy of Gender Equality and the empowerment of all women that advocates for real change and create real efforts in ensuring a society that is fair, just, safe and equal to all women and girls. “The Philippine Army seeks to bring about an effort to further empower women and girls in all facets of society especially within our organization. It also aims to inspire and empower women to be agents of change and not mere beneficiaries or participants”.
Army 1st Lieutenant Joan Gamponia, Personnel Officer of the 402nd Brigade underscored the changes that were significantly made within the organization giving equal opportunities and upholding the rights of the female soldiers such as the installation of significant position and designation in the Army.
Meanwhile, in his statement, BGen Licudine acknowledges the significant contributions of women in his unit towards attaining the Brigade mission as gender equality among men and women is one of the programs of the Army which the 402Bde strictly adheres and supports.
“We provide our men and women the chance to showcase their capabilities while learning from their experiences and contributing to the building of a peaceful and progressive Caraga region”, BGen Licudine added.
